Teaching dance through technique, creative inquiry, and the experience of making work together.
Jee Ahn
Assistant Professor of Dance
Dance Major Program Advisor
Middle Tennessee State University
Jee Ahn’s teaching cultivates thoughtful, adaptable dancers who can move across artistic traditions and collaborate across backgrounds. From foundational through advanced study, she connects technical development with creative inquiry, emphasizing movement efficiency, dynamic alignment, spatial awareness, and artistic intention. Her continuing study of Countertechnique informs this approach. Familiar movement sequences become opportunities to investigate dynamics, initiation, and direction.
An inclusive studio begins with recognizing the experience each student brings. Having taught students with widely varying access to prior training, Jee combines rigorous expectations with individual guidance. Peer observation, collaborative exploration, and weekly reflective journals help students recognize progress, articulate challenges, and take ownership of their learning. Their reflections also shape the feedback and adjustments she offers.
In choreography, students progress from compositional foundations to research-based projects, including site-specific work and dance films. They experiment, develop individual artistic perspectives, and negotiate creative decisions together. Her research into dancers’ psychological experiences further informs her interest in helping students respond constructively to critique, pressure, and setbacks. Across the studio, classroom, and rehearsal process, teaching supports both artistic independence and the capacity to work thoughtfully with others.
